Strictly Come Dancing, Merlin, Harry Potter, Lark Rise to Candleford and Doctor Who all in one go? Plus Postman Pat and Fireman Sam xD

I love the BBC.

It annoys me that Children in Need is only for kids in the UK...but its still a good thing.

Draco Malfoy third?? Nice.
You Scored as Ron Weasley
You often feel like second best and as a result don't have an awful lot of self confidence, but a truer more capable friend would be hard to find.

Mark the bands you've HEARD OF. Not just the ones you like.
Be honest people! If you really have never heard of them.
When you`re done, tag 13 people.

the bands I've heard of.... )

This thing makes no sense. Why multiply by two? *shrug*

Title: Reconciliation
Summary: Andromeda encounters her sister a few months after the Battle of Hogwarts
Characters: Andromeda Tonks, Narcissa Malfoy
Genre: Gen
Rating/Warnings: None
Medium: Fic
Word Count: 741

The inspiration for this came to me at 2am this morning, when I was trying to sleep. It seemed like a great idea at the time but now I don't know if I like it. Anyway, I've wanted to write something about Andromeda for a while. Her whole story is really interesting (and quite sad).

Narcissa had not uttered one word to her since the day she had married Ted Tonks. Not once in thirty years. )

I like this article. And now I won't need to feel bad about buying ridiculously expensive coffee - Starbucks have gone Fairtrade. Yays!

The other story that Schultz cannot get out of his head he heard at a charitable refuge called Project Rwanda. A woman he met there had been among the girls who had been raped during the Rwandan genocide of 1994, and when she had become pregnant she had been abandoned by what was left of her family. She was HIV positive and lived in a one-room hut with the daughter she had carried to term, now 15, and the five children of her murdered brothers and sisters, whom she had adopted. She supported her children by getting up at dawn and buying onions from a wholesaler and then sitting all day at the market, trying to sell them. Once again, Schultz asked her his question. What did she most need to make her life easier? Two things, the woman told him; first, access to microfinance so she could buy more onions and get her business on a sounder footing; second, some glass for the windows of her hut to keep out the termites. Once again Schultz was stopped in his tracks. He helped the woman with some money. "We must be," he says, "responsible for what we see and hear." It is a favourite Schultz mantra. Another is: "Don't be a bystander."

In a weird way, it's like chicken soup for the soul...

I'm moving on from BBC news to the Guardian. Not sure if that's a good thing. The Guardian is probably more biased and less straightforward, but they write in a very interesting way.

I want something new and interesting to read. I might buy a book or just go the library, but the library doesn't usually have new stuff. Any recommendations?

Several high-profile authors are to stop visiting schools in protest at new laws requiring them to be vetted to work with youngsters.
Philip Pullman, author of fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials, said the idea was "ludicrous and insulting".
Former children's laureates Anne Fine and Michael Morpurgo have hit out at the scheme which costs £64 per person. [...] Anthony Horowitz - author of the popular Alex Rider series - wrote in a comment article for the paper: "In essence, I'm being asked to pay £64 to prove that I am not a paedophile.

- BBC

The extremes that health and safety regulations go to and then they complain that children these days are 'bubblewrapped'. It actually disgusts me.

I read this article about how messed up the A level system has become on guardian.co.uk.

The new modular curriculum introduced meant an examination or assessed coursework in every subject, every term. Students stopped asking 'what does it mean' and started asking 'how much is this worth'? They became glassy-eyed, like hamsters on play wheels, unable to think beyond the next exam or piece of coursework.

And with a government intent on increasing participation in post-16 education, class sizes began to swell, cranking up the pressure further. With classes of up to 25, ranging from students who barely scraped a C grade in GCSE English to Oxbridge candidates, delivering GCSE-style lessons was the only way to cover the necessary ground.

It's so true, it makes me sad. I remember having my "interview" with the sixth form. My high school made out like they really made sure you were good enough before letting you in, but that wasn't the case at all. As long as you didn't get all E's, you were in.
